Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, refers to a group of metabolic diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Precisely, Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects body’s ability to use the energy found in food.

There are 2 types of Diabetes:

  1. Type 1 which is Insulin dependent DM in which there is generally lack of insulin produced by Beta cells of Pancreas.
  2. Type 2 which is Non Insulin Dependent DM in which there is sufficient Insulin in the body, but the receptors of the cells are not able to recognise the insulin.

Type 2 DM which is actually a lifestyle disorder can be managed by using a little dietary and lifestyle modifications and herbs which are found in our kitchen. Managing the disorder primarily aims at managing the diet and that can be easily done by exploring our kitchen herbs like Cinnamon, Fenugreek, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic, Curry Leaves, Clove etc.

Ginger: One study published in 2012 showed that ginger root was so powerful in controlling blood sugar levels that the body could use glucose without relying on insulin. Antidiabetic, hypolipidemic and anti-oxidative properties in ginger are beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels. Ginger also can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidation and improve cholesterol levels.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon contains bioactive components that can help lower blood glucose levels. Due to its hypoglycemic activity, it can improve glucose tolerance and lower the level of glucose in blood. In addition, its fiber content slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars.

Curry Leaves: Aromatic curry leaves may also be useful in managing raised glucose levels in blood. Several minerals in this herb help maintain normal glucose levels of blood. In addition, it influences carbohydrate metabolism.
